Immigration Solution

While I'm for sealing our borders first, there is no way we're going to deport the 12 million illegal we have at this time. My solution is to offer them a path to citizenship. While I said a path to citizenship, I would not make it easy.

1: We should establish a period of time a illegal could apply for the green card (90 days?). That seems enough, but it could be longer. Any illegal who did not apply for the green card during this period could be deported immediately. An illegal who came to the US. after this period would immediately be deported. Any illegal filing for the green card, and guilty of a felony would be immediately deported.

2: When the immigrant, applies for the card they would have say when they first came to the US. They would the have to pay a fee/fine ($1000+) for each year they were illegally in the US. If they are not truthful, and it's discovered, they can be deported immediately.

3: The path to citizenship would take longer. At this time it takes 5 years to become a citizen. For illegals under this program it would be longer (8+) years. During that period of time they would have to pay the fee I suggested in 2 above. They would only get to become a citizen when the fee was completely paid. After a period of time, and the fee was not paid, they could be deported.

4: Those illegals who find the fees to much, would be able to go back to there country, and apply for a temporary worker permit, or just go back.

I know that a new set of laws would have to be established for this sort of program, but I'm only suggesting the way to go start.
